ISOFIB has innovation in its DNA: we contribute to building a healthier and ultimately stronger world through the valorization of material technologies derived from natural raw materials, including locally grown hemp and certified ecological wood.
This is why ISOFIB was immediately interested in the INTERFACES Laboratories approach: these experimentation and innovation laboratories allow students to explore innovative solutions related to wood construction and bio-based materials. ISOFIB is proud to contribute to this experimentation approach developed for the students of the Faculty of Planning of the Université de Montréal.
The INTERFACES Wood Construction Laboratories: exploring to learn more
Created in 2018, the INTERFACES Laboratories of the Fayolle-Magil Construction Chair, the School of Architecture and the Faculty of Planning of the Université de Montréal are training activities offered by professor-researchers at the School of Architecture, including Gonzalo Lizarralde, who is responsible for scientific monitoring, management and research, and Jean-Paul Boudreau, a research member of the chair in architecture, construction and sustainability.
The students who participate in these labs, who are studying architecture, project management, design or urban planning, work in a hybrid environment that combines theoretical learning (seminars, design charrette activities) and the world of practice (construction sites, factories, material distribution centers, etc.).
In each lab, students design and practice an innovative constructive solution, in the form of a full-scale prototype, incorporating wood and various other materials. "We are interested in the interfaces between several constructive systems, between materials and between various innovation ecosystems," explains Gonzalo Lizarralde, a full professor at the School of Architecture.
In this context, students are asked to think about issues such as "how to better connect the building to its environment by using local materials," "how to effectively integrate the structure with the façade," "what spaces should be created between the exterior and interior of a building," or "how to connect the user to the technical functioning of the building envelope.
The session concludes with an evaluation, outreach and post-project reflection activity to which stakeholders and the Chair's partners are invited.

With INTERFACES Laboratories, ISOFIB contributes to Quebec research in sustainable building
As a partner of the INTERFACES laboratories, ISOFIB makes its biomaterials, such as hemp and lime, available to students and researchers. These materials were used, for example, in the Bain de forêt project, conducted by three students in 2020. By rethinking the ancestral method of self-construction of the corded wood wall, the students used hemp concrete as an alternative to concrete, which is particularly energy-consuming, as a filling mortar.

Hemp, a healthy, renewable and reusable material emerging in Quebec, was combined with a natural lime mortar to obtain a hemp concrete. This composition is particularly interesting when used as a building envelope for its breathable properties.
Thus, with a project like Bain de forêt, ISOFIB contributes to the realization of applied research projects, to create a stimulating environment and to promote innovation in construction at the University of Montreal.

Small multi-residential buildings, duplex or triplex type, built in the 1940s and 1950s are extremely common in Quebec: characteristic architecture, brick walls and log structure, limited or no original insulation, very leaky windows...
When they have not undergone major renovations, such buildings present major energy consumption issues. It is exactly in this context that the architect in charge of giving a second life to the adjoining plex built in 1940, located on the Plateau-Mont-Royal, in Montreal, contacted ISOFIB. Here is the diagnosis of ISOFIB's consultants.
First tip: improve the insulation of the roof and walls. The poor energy efficiency of the urban duplex required a drastic upgrade. The classic intervention of insulation from the inside was the only realistic avenue, since the configuration of the building and the exterior brick walls left no real opportunity to insulate from the outside. The first step of the project was therefore the complete stripping.
Nevertheless, in the urban context, square footage is scarce, so the team had to adapt to the specifics of the project and the client's needs.
ISOFIB's team demonstrated that it is possible to add insulating value to the building without encroaching too much on the living space. This is where the R-factor of the NaturChanvre panels convinced the project architect: their thermal resistance of R-3.7 made it possible to reach an R-13 factor for the non-dividing walls. Of course, a 5.5-inch wall, which would have increased the insulation to R-20, would have been ideal. But considering that the log structure, typical of Montreal construction, gives the building a good thermal mass, the R-13 value was targeted for the insulation.
The application of NaturChanvre panels is extremely easy: these semi-rigid insulating materials, very versatile, and whose size is standardized, were installed in the interior walls and roof. Their implementation is pleasant, since even if the mechanical resistance of the fiber requires a grinder for cutting, it is not necessary for the workers to wear gloves.
This thermal correction has largely contributed to improving the energy balance of the building. Particular attention was paid to thermal bridges, which were cut to the maximum. And the biobased panels make the difference for the interior living comfort: the thermal phase shift of the hemp fiber, up to 3 times more efficient than conventional insulating materials, considerably increases the capacity of the insulating panels to retain the heat inside the building.
Second step of the renovation strategy: optimize the waterproofing to improve the durability of the building. ISOFIB's experts proposed an adapted waterproofing system: the SALOLA membranes. Thus, the Hygromax membrane was applied above the hemp wool insulation to act as a moisture-regulating vapour barrier. This intelligent membrane promotes the transfer of water vapor according to the relative humidity inside the building, controlling the movement of moisture between the interior and exterior. It thus limits the risks of condensation in the walls.
SALOLA high performance membranes respect the 3 envelope rule of a wall:
- they remain the most closed to water vapor diffusion on the interior side. The PERM value should be between 10.8 and 12.9 PERM on the interior side.
- they are more open on the outside and the outer membrane has a permeance of 129 (Permeance expresses the degree to which a material allows the transfer of water vapor. The higher the permeance, the easier it is for vapor to pass through a wall)
- they create a dynamic flow of the same dimension as a cone that opens outwards.
To ensure a complete seal, SALOLA Blue Aerotape Premium was used to seal the membranes and their clips. This type of adhesive tape, formulated with acrylic without volatile organic compounds (VOCs), does not dry out, even over time, so unlike conventional products that lose adhesion over time, SALOLA tapes offer better adhesion over the long term.
Convinced by the performance of SALOLA membranes, the project architect opted for the full range of waterproofing products for the installation of windows, but also plumbing and electrical ducts.
To accompany the insulation and waterproofing works of this project, the experts of ISOFIB gave all the necessary advice to the architect. Convinced that the understanding facilitates the implementation in the rules of art, they put their competence in building mechanics at the service of each of their customers.
What exactly is ISOFIB's service? On a major project such as this one, where the customer buys the insulation and the waterproofing system, the ISOFIB advisor spent more than an hour on the site to present the details of the implementation of the selected materials and products.
In this construction site, the customer appreciated his experience: working with ISOFIB products convinced him that it is quite possible to optimize the building envelope with healthy and performing materials and products, by applying them in a quite standard way, in a conventional renovation. No special training is required!

ISOFIB offers a complete solution for foolproof windows and doors: the Salola Environnement high-performance sealant kit
A high-performance window contributes to the energy efficiency of a building... Only if it is installed according to the rules of the trade, with the right products! Because a poorly installed window product can quickly threaten the integrity of the envelope: while air leaks cause energy loss and discomfort, water infiltration causes irreversible damage to the walls. With ISOFIB's Window Waterproofing Pack, you have everything you need to deal with the elements, both in construction and renovation.
How to achieve a waterproofing of the windows? How to avoid leaks and water infiltration around the windows? All the answers in this article.
Windows and building sealing: the key to sustainability
The building envelope is a system where the roof, walls and foundation must remain air and watertight. The openings also contribute to protect the whole; the role of the windows is to let the air in, but only when they are open!
In addition to causing heat loss, an air leak (around a window or door) can lead to condensation problems caused by moisture carried in the air. While rainwater infiltration can cause damage to the interior of walls, water vapour is the cause of most water infiltration problems. When moist air enters the envelope and cannot escape, or if it condenses on contact with a material whose temperature is below its dew point, it turns into water.
Thus, even though doors and windows are openings in the envelope, they must ensure the continuity of the airtightness of the envelope to avoid discomfort, heat loss, humidity and potential mold.
Poorly installed windows and doors are not uncommon: while they are a critical point for air leakage (causing 25% of heat loss in homes), the water infiltration they can cause is one of the most common home insurance claims. Therefore, the installation of a window, whether it is a new construction or a renovation, is as important as the quality of the glazing, the frame and the spacers.
A good installation of the membranes, while ensuring the adhesion of the connections as well as the fixings, makes it possible not only to protect the building from moisture, rain as well as the wind, but brings a better thermal resistance and a homogeneous comfort in the building.
Install a window in the rules of the art with the ISOFIB Waterproofing Pack
To make life easier for building contractors, renovators and owners, ISOFIB has developed a kit of innovative and reliable products to ensure the watertightness of residential, commercial and institutional windows: the Window Waterproofing Pack.
This pack is composed of products from Salola Environnement, which designs and distributes airtightness solutions for the building envelope.
Salola Environnement markets membranes and technical accessories, including high-performance adhesives commonly used by builders seeking performance and durability. These products meet the requirements of certifications such as Passive House.
For its Window Waterproofing Pack, ISOFIB has selected the following products:
AEROCONNECT HPV, vapour permeable adhesive membrane for sealing exterior joinery
AEROCONNECT HPV is an airtight and rainproof membrane, permeable to vapour, self-adhesive on its entire underside and with an adhesive strip on its surface. It is specially developed for the joint between the joinery and the rain screen membrane, whatever the type of installation of the joinery. This very thin membrane seals around nail and staple holes.
AEROCONNECT HPV is used to seal between the structure and the exterior joinery (exterior surface installation or tunnel installation) or between the structure and the light facade, curtain wall or aluminum semi-curtain wall.
Why a vapor permeable air barrier membrane?
AEROCONNECT HPV acts as a vapour barrier on its surface, while being open to vapour diffusion on its underside. This can be compared to the functions of Gore-Tex outdoor clothing, which is both waterproof and breathable. In concrete terms, the AEROCONNECT HPV membrane prevents water vapor from seeping in and damaging the wood structure of the window frame. In the unlikely event that moisture gets behind the self-adhesive membrane, its intelligent micropores allow it to evacuate this moisture and ensure the preservation of the structure.
How do I apply a vapor permeable membrane to exterior woodwork?
The underside, which is highly self-adhesive over its entire surface, allows for easy handling and installation, without the need for additional glue, ensuring complete coverage. The support must be perfectly prepared, dust-free, dry and free of grease. On masonry or concrete, it is advisable to use AEROPRIM spray primer.
● Very strong adhesion, acrylic adhesive without volatile organic compounds, which does not dry over time, unlike conventional products that lose adhesion over time.
● Processing temperatures from +5°C to +40°C. Can also be used at low temperatures, while carefully checking that the surfaces to be bonded are free of moisture, frost or ice, which would prevent effective bonding
● Temperature resistance between -40°C and +80°C
● UV resistance up to twelve months. The membrane can be left exposed to UV rays
● Watertightness to driving rain 1200 Pa
Available in 3 formats:
● 100 mm x 25 m (~4'' x 82') roll
● 150 mm x 25 m roll (~6'' x 82')
● 200 mm x 25 m roll (~8'' x 82')
AEROCONNECT SD20, adhesive vapour barrier membrane for sealing interior joinery
AEROCONNECT SD20 is an airtight vapour barrier membrane, the underside of which is provided with a self-adhesive layer of very strong adhesion over its entire width, making it easy to install and perfectly invisible. This very thin membrane seals around nail and staple holes.
AEROCONNECT SD20 is an airtight film combining PP and fiber reinforcement fleece, specially developed for interior applications, for the joint between the joinery and the vapour barrier, regardless of the type of joinery installation.
What are the advantages of AEROCONNECT SD20 compared to the tapes of American
competitors?
The major advantage of Salola membranes is the intelligence of the membranes, which ensures the diffusion of water vapor trapped in a wall to the outside. This characteristic allows for a much greater durability of the building envelope, preserving it from mold and rot.
This membrane resists well to stresses such as temperature changes, expansion, contraction, passage of time, mold, dust...
How do I apply AEROCONNECT SD20 to the interior contour of windows?
The gluing surface must be sufficiently flat and perfectly prepared, dust-free, dry and free of grease. On masonry or concrete, it is recommended to use AEROPRIM spray primer.
Like AEROCONNECT HPV, AEROCONNECT SD20 can be applied either around the entire perimeter of the frame, or only at the top of the frame, provided that the frame has its own air and water tightness. In the latter case, AEROCONNECT HP and AEROCONNECT SD20 must extend 100 mm (~4") beyond each side of the frame or create a 100 mm (~4") overhang on the frames.
Available in 3 sizes:
● 100 mm x 25 m (~4'' x 82') roll
● 150 mm x 25 m roll (~6'' x 82')
● 200 mm x 25 m roll (~8'' x 82')

SEAL & FLEX, polyurethane foam to ensure air and water tightness around windows
To complete your airtightness and insulation around the window, simply apply SEAL&FLEX foam in the gaps left between the window frame and the joinery. Flexible, it adapts to all situations, without deforming the supports, thanks to its low expansion. The application of SEAL&FLEX polyurethane ensures the continuity of the building envelope's performance between the windows and the walls. Its characteristics in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as air and water tightness are exceptional:
● insulation: 0.0035 λ
● reduction of the acoustic effect: 60 dB
● airtightness: 1,000 Pa
● driving rain tightness: 600 Pa
Economical, a 750ml aerosol can seals 575 linear feet for a ⅓ inch thick joint.

The results from the first environmental product declaration for hemp insulation in North America are conclusive…
NatureChanvre insulation is environmentally friendly — with supporting evidence!
An environmental product declaration (EPD), made according to international standards, reveals an outstanding environmental record. ISOFIB thus proves beyond any doubt that Naturchanvre insulating boards display an environmental performance envied by its competitors.
But what exactly is an EPD? What is the environmental performance level of NatureChanvre insulation?
NatureChanvre thermal insulation contributes to reducing the energy consumption of the building with which it was constructed: its thermal resistance is R 3.7 per inch. But is the product itself ecological? What is its own environmental impact? This is where the concept of life cycle analysis comes into play.
Life cycle assessment, a method of evaluating the potential impacts of products (and manufacturing processes) takes into account all the stages involved in the manufacture, use, transportation and disposal of a product, from A to Z.
Based on international standards, LCA quantifies the following criteria:
● Acidification potential
● Eutrophication potential
● Smog formation potential
● Ozone depletion potential
From these indicators, which quantify the environmental value of the product, the EPD can be established, a bit like a nutritional value sheet on a food product.
NatureChanvre insulating boards are biosourced, composed in major part of vegetable raw material, therefore renewable, and are little transformed. As such, they already have a very favourable environmental perception.
They are also made in Quebec. It is therefore conceivable that their carbon impact and even their life cycle are favourable. But by how much exactly?
EPD is used to quantify environmental performance using LCA. Nature Fibres, a pioneer in the manufacture of biobased insulation in Canada, is the first manufacturer to have sought an EPD for this type of product in North America.
The EPD and LCA were carried out by CT Consultant, a firm specialized in life cycle assessment of products, services and buildings according to EN 15804, ISO 14025 and ISO 21930 standards and revised by Vertima.
What are the results? Charles Thibodeau, an expert in life cycle assessment and environmental engineering, told Ecohabitation when the EPD was released: “NatureChanvre insulation has favourable environmental performance compared to other insulation, particularly in terms of climate change.”
● The manufacture of the hemp panel does not cause any loss and their lifespan is considered equivalent to that of the building, set at 75 years.
NatureChanvre’s EPD demonstrates outstanding environmental value. Aim for high energy efficiency in your buildings while choosing materials with high environmental value and limiting your impact on climate change.

Consuming locally is also possible when insulating a building! Naturchanvre panels are made from industrial hemp, and although right now most of it comes from France, our goal over the years is to reach total autonomy with Quebec hemp fibre. For the portion of hemp grown in the Eastern Townships, the distance travelled from the fields to the production lines located in Val-des-Sources (formerly Asbestos) is extremely short: less than 200 km!
After harvesting, the central part of its stem, called the hemp chaff, is used as raw material, passing through the industrial processes of defibration and napping. The finished products, i.e., the insulating boards, come off the production lines, ready to be installed in the walls of your buildings. Insulating with Naturchanvre boards contributes to the dynamism of the agricultural and industrial sectors of the Des Sources RCM.
Naturchanvre insulating boards are biosourced: meaning its raw material is organic. They are therefore particularly suitable for bioconstruction projects, while being adapted to all types of buildings.
Cultivated without pesticides and insecticides, industrial hemp requires very little water to grow. Its growth is very fast (about 120 days), which allows it to store 5 times more CO2 than wood, for the same growth period. The raw material represents 88% of the finished product, for 12% of binders.
Thanks to a simple industrial process, hemp materials do not contain any glue harmful to health. Only organic binders are used in the manufacturing process, in addition to a salt-based fireproofing treatment. Such insulating boards reduce the risk of mould, insect and rodent infestations. Putting it simply, they don’t degrade over time.
The environmental impact of hemp insulation products is therefore limited to a minimum.
Naturchanvre insulation is also extremely healthy: not only is it safe for workers to install (and even pleasant: it doesn’t sting!), but the product does not emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the home.
Insulation is a priority strategy to improve the energy efficiency of a building Naturchanvre boards offer aninteresting thermal resistance of R-3.7 per inch, equivalent to cellulose and glass wool, slightly lower than rock wool. The different board sizes available provide an insulation level of R9, R13, R20 or R30, for the thickest products. Find all the information below.
How to ensure thermal comfort indoors during summer? How do you not get too hot in the attic? Naturchanvre boards have a great capacity to retain heat penetration inside the building. In fact, hemp offers an ideal solution to meet these needs. In addition to its insulating properties, the thermal phase shift of hemp fibre is remarkable: up to 3 times more efficient than conventional insulation. The solar calories are stored during the day in the walls and roof, then slowly redistributed at night. This is an advantage for the attic of a building where the roof does not slow down the heat transfer.
Interior comfort is also assured by its water vapour permeability properties. Hemp naturally regulates the flow of vapours from temperature differences between the interior and exterior. The relative humidity level inside remains balanced, even during humid summer heat waves.
Lastly, Naturchanvre insulation is an interesting asset to optimize the acoustic comfort of a building. Indeed, hemp has a good attenuation coefficient of airborne sound:
NaturChanvre insulation application areas:
● Interior insulation of above ground walls
● Interior insulation, lining and divisions
● Insulation of lost or converted attics
● Cathedral roof insulation
Naturchanvre insulating boards are perfectly integrated in the composition of a high performance ecological wall:
● Good thermal insulation against heat and cold
● Excellent capacity of thermal dephasing and hygrometric regulation
● High mechanical strength
● Durable fibres: no crushing over time
● Comfortable installation, no need for gloves
● Very good resistance to pests
● Low carbon footprint: bio-based, recyclable and 100% local
● Does not emit VOC
While hemp wool has advantages that make it comparable or better than other insulation solutions, there are some characteristics that must be considered:
● Various applications, but not universal: semi-rigid hemp wool panels are very versatile products, which can be installed in interior walls, as well as the roof, but outside installation is delicate, because they do not support the rain as well as rock wool panels. Similarly, they should not be used to insulate a slab.
● Competitive price, but not entry level: hemp wool is more expensive than cellulose or glass wool. But if the price of hemp wool is comparable to rock wool, it will cost you less in hemp than in rock wool for the same thermal phase shift.
● Non-fireproof board, although meeting required fire standards. Rock wool is fireproof, but hemp is not
With comparable thermal resistance and soundproofing properties, why use hemp wool instead of rock wool? This question is often asked by ISOFIB customers.
Here’s what we say to them: because rock wool is a mineral wool fibre material made from basalt (a volcanic rock) and slag, its grey energy (the energy required for its production), is much greater than that of hemp wool. And the rock wool panel, manufactured by an international brand, is far from local!
What are the advantages of hemp over glass wool? The thermal capacity of “pink wool” is very average and its phase shift is mediocre: the thermal comfort offered by hemp wool is truly superior. Moreover, glass wool is very resistant to humidity: it often settles in the walls, which is absolutely not the case with hemp panels.
Thanks to their attractive price, Naturchanvre’s semi-rigid compressible insulating boards meet the needs of contractors as well as individuals, whether they are builders or renovators.

Installation of hemp wool panels is easy: since they are compressible, add ¾ inches to the desired dimension to ensure compression placement. Cutting is done with a grinder, a circular saw or a sabre knife.
Hemp insulation is an ideal material for efficient and healthy roofs and walls. Here are two applications for walls:

]]>Phase shifting can be defined as the passing of air through walls. To better understand this phenomenon, let’s consider wood fibre insulation. The wooden panel has a high interior density. It’s worth nothing that the more a product is dense, the lower its R-value. As a result, there will be fewer airmolecules inside, generating high absorption of heat and coolness.
If we then examine the hemp wool insulation of our ISOTK line, it is easy to see that its texture is much softer and therefore less dense. With this type of product, the phase shift is lower, making it possible to heat our homes or buildings faster. The air will circulate more naturally. Two pieces of advice to keep in mind when trying to create optimal insulation in your home:Keep the thermal mass inside with hempcrete, for example, which will absorb fresh air during hot summer days and heat from your heating system during the winter. Thermal redistribution will occur efficiently in the various rooms.Protect the thermal mass with higher R-value insulation.Need more information about these products, please visit this section.
In different weather conditions, we try to control the permeation of outside vapour into the house or building and, conversely, by controlling vapour from the inside making its way out.At ISOFIB, we recommend the use of SALOLA brand sealants (salola.fr), which will allow you to control the diffusion of water vapour effectively. In the SALOLA product line, we offer innovative insulators that are open to water vapour diffusion, which means that they have permeability, allowing the house to breathe.
The concept is similar to the human body and the role of the skin: water drains from the body when we sweat but also prevents water from getting absorbed into the body. By facilitating water permeation through the walls, they remain dry and thus prevents high humidity levels that could promote growth of fungi or mold in the long term.Effectively removing all moisture will allow buildings and homes to maintain a superior air quality and, naturally, last longer.Need more advice, please contact us today !
